Family-owned tree care in Birmingham since 1995
A Homewood family business that started the day Hurricane Opal came through Birmingham – and has been taking care of the city’s trees ever since.
October 4, 1995
Hurricane Opal came ashore near Pensacola and kept going north through Alabama that night. By morning there were trees across roads, roofs and power lines all over the Birmingham area.
Wesley Jones was in college then. He wanted to help people dig out, and he needed tuition money, so he picked up a saw and went to work. That was the first day of RJ Tree Service.
The art of tree care
What Wesley learned in those first months is that there is an art to tree work. Anyone can cut a log on the ground. Taking a tree apart over somebody’s house, knowing which limbs should go and which should stay, and leaving the yard cleaner than you found it – that takes years. He loved the work and he liked helping people, and he has been “advancing the art of tree care” ever since.
Still a family business
Today RJ Tree Service is still based in Homewood. Wesley does the estimates and works on the jobs himself, together with his son. Many customers have called us for years – one of them for fifteen.
How we work
What you can count on
- An honest answer
If a tree can be saved with pruning, we tell you – even when removal would be the bigger job.
- We show up when we say
Reviews mention it again and again: on time for the estimate, on time for the job.
- Your property first
Limbs lowered on ropes or lifted by crane, so the roof, the fence and the neighbor’s garden stay untouched.
- A clean yard
Brush chipped, wood hauled, everything raked. You should not find a twig.
- Good cuts
No topping, no spikes in trees that stay, cuts made where the tree can heal.
- There after storms
We started with a hurricane. A tree on your house still gets us out of bed.

Reviews
In our customers’ words
He was able to come out quickly to cut down a large rotten tree in my backyard. I had a few quotes before settling on RJ and he had the best price and was the most friendly person we had come by. He’s very friendly and professional and did a wonderful job. 10/10 recommend, if I ever have another tree issue I’ll definitely call RJ and his team.
RJ Tree Service is EXCEPTIONAL. I only write reviews for companies and people that just blow me away. RJ Tree Service does great work. They communicate well and clearly, tell you what they’re going to do, then do it. Very professional and they clean up any mess after the job is done. Pricing is reasonable and they are quick to get back to you.
Cut down 4 tall trees for me and hauled them off. Did an excellent job. Professional, on time, personable. Highly recommend!
