Tree work in Vestavia Hills

Vestavia Hills is built on and around Shades Mountain, and you can feel it in almost every backyard. Houses step down the hillside, backyards drop off into woods, and the tallest trees on a lot are often the hardest to reach. We work here a lot – it is just over the mountain from our office in Homewood.

The ridge is pine and oak country. Loblolly and shortleaf pines grow tall and straight on the thin, rocky soil of the slopes, with oaks and hickories below them. Pines are the trees we take down most often in Vestavia: after a dry summer, bark beetles kill stressed pines quickly, and a dead pine uphill of a house is not something to leave standing. Dead pines get brittle fast, so we usually take them down with a crane or from the ground rather than climbing them.

Access shapes every job. When the only way to a tree is down a set of steps behind the house, everything has to be lowered and carried out – or lifted over the house by crane. We will look at the lot, tell you which way the tree should come out, and give you a price that includes the cleanup.

In Cahaba Heights and the lower parts of the city, the lots are flatter and the trees older – big water oaks, sweetgums and maples that need thinning and deadwood removal more than removal. In newer neighborhoods like Liberty Park, the issues are different again: trees left close to new houses during construction, which often decline a few years later as their damaged roots fail.

Storms come over the ridge with a lot of wind. If you have a tree that leans toward the house, or a big limb over the roof, have it looked at in the calm months – it is cheaper and safer than dealing with it after it falls.

Questions from Vestavia Hills

Why do so many pines die in Vestavia Hills?

Pines on thin, rocky ridge soil get stressed in hot, dry summers, and bark beetles attack stressed pines. Once the needles turn yellow-red, the tree is usually dead within weeks.

Can you reach a tree at the bottom of a steep backyard?

Yes. We carry and lower everything by hand on rope, or use a crane to lift the tree out over the house.

My builder left trees close to the new house. Should I worry?

Trees whose roots were cut or buried during construction often decline over several years. Watch for thinning leaves and dead limbs at the top – we can take a look.

What homeowners say about us

He was able to come out quickly to cut down a large rotten tree in my backyard. I had a few quotes before settling on RJ and he had the best price and was the most friendly person we had come by. He’s very friendly and professional and did a wonderful job. 10/10 recommend, if I ever have another tree issue I’ll definitely call RJ and his team.

RJ Tree Service is EXCEPTIONAL. I only write reviews for companies and people that just blow me away. RJ Tree Service does great work. They communicate well and clearly, tell you what they’re going to do, then do it. Very professional and they clean up any mess after the job is done. Pricing is reasonable and they are quick to get back to you.
