We clear land in the Birmingham area – building lots, overgrown backyards, fence lines and brushy hillsides – from the first tree down to ground that is ready for a house, a garden or grass. One job, one crew: trees, brush, stumps and Bobcat work.
Lot clearing for building
Before a house or an addition goes up, the lot needs to be cleared of the trees inside the building footprint and the driveway, the brush and the stumps. We take down the trees, grind or pull the stumps, and leave the ground clean so the builder can start. If you want to keep some good trees on the lot, we mark them first and work around them – mature oaks are hard to replace.
Some cities have rules about trees on lots being developed. Homewood, for example, has a tree protection ordinance that applies to new construction. Check with the city or your builder before clearing.
Brush and privet clearing
Chinese privet is the plague of Birmingham backyards. It fills fence lines, creek banks and the back of lots with a thicket you can’t walk through, and it comes back from the roots. Kudzu, honeysuckle, greenbrier and young sweetgums join in. We cut it all out, chip it and haul it away. One customer had a large yard overrun with privet – after the clearing he wrote that it looked pristine.
Privet resprouts, so for a lasting result the stumps should be ground or treated, and the area kept mowed or planted. We will tell you what it will take to keep it from coming back.
Bobcat work
A skid steer – everyone calls it a Bobcat – does the heavy lifting after the trees are gone: pushing brush piles, moving logs, pulling out root balls, rough grading and spreading topsoil or gravel. It fits through gaps that bigger machines can’t, which matters on the narrow, sloped lots of Homewood and Vestavia. On red clay we watch the weather – a soaked lot gets rutted, so we schedule the machine work for dry days.
